Overhead travelling cranes

Overhead travelling cranes are devices intended for the inhouse transport which work in the intermittent system. They are equipped with mechanisms for lifting and lowering loads – hoists or winches and they are able to transport loads to a desired place. They are subject to technical inspection. In order to operate overhead travelling cranes the licence and the training course are required.

Overhead travelling cranes belong to lifting equipment and they consists of parallel runways with a travelling bridge spanning the gap They are intended for transport of loads in a limited scope on rails in the maximal distance between them. An overhead travelling crane consists of bridge and two end trucks. The bridge has a form of a girder between rails and it is mounted to end trucks which are positioned perpendicularly to the bridge. The end truck are equipped with the drive and wheels thanks to which the overhead travelling crane moves on the rails. Additionally, along the bridge of the device there is the rope or chain system lifting a hoist or a winch for raising the load on the hook or another lifting attachment. Detailed information concerning overhead travelling cranes is presented during the training course.

The devices are divided into the following types:

  • gantry crane or crane girder – when the overhead travelling crane moves on the rails
  • suspension crane – when it is suspended to the rails from the bottom.
  • bridge crane – when the crane moves over the ground rails and its bridge is situated over the rails

Only persons who have an overhead travelling crane licence are authorized to operate the devices. It can be obtained by enrolling on our training course for overhead travelling cranes. The training focuses on the theory and practice concerning the operation devices dependent on their chosen type corresponding to the licence.

The following training courses for overhead travelling cranes in accordance with the UDT requirements are distinguished:

  • II S – floor operated overhead travelling cranes, hoists and winches of the category II W, stationary workshop cranes
  • I S – devices controlled from the operator’s cab, hoists and winches of the category I W and devices of the category II S

Every training course for overhead travelling cranes is ended with the exam before the commission of the Bureau of Technical Inspection (Urząd Dozoru Technicznego). It checks the knowledge and skills and after passing it the participant obtains the licence to operate overhead travelling cranes.
