The overhead travelling crane – pre-operational procedures

A proper preparation of the workplace may reduce the risk of hazards and accidents. During the work of the overhead travelling crane operator it is very important to know and obey the rules of occupational health and safety. This article presents all key notions concerning rules of occupational health and safety before the operator stars working. In this case inspections are the most important, as they allow to determine the condition of the device and thanks to them all necessary repairs and maintenance works can be carried out. The properly prepared workplace is important not only for the operator but also for his co-workers.

Before you start working:

  • check if the device has a valid UDT decision – the device without valid decisions issued by the Bureau of Technical Inspection (Urząd Dozoru Technicznego) may be damaged and increase the risk of their operation
  • remember to obey the rules of occupational health and safety, including especially the instructions for the position
  • familiarize yourself with the device’s manual if you are going to operate it for the first time
  • operate the device only when you have the overhead travelling crane licence
  • if you notice any failures, leakages or other alarming situations turn off the device and report them to the persons responsible
  • read the latest entries in a device service log book, maintenance log book or in operators’ log book
  • check the surroundings of the device, in particular pay attention to the obstacles which are present on the trajectory of the device, remove them or report their presence to the persons responsible if you cannot remove them on your own
  • inform employees working in the vicinity of the device about the starting the operation of the device
  • fix communication signals with the operator of the lifting attachment
  • check the weights of loads and find out if they correspond to the loading capacity of the device
  • prepare the place for storing loads
  • carry out the inspection of the vehicle – inspect visually its efficiency and current state of work, check the working of security elements and drive units during the test operation
  • make an entry in the device service log book or in another document
